Florida Avenue Brewing Co.'s Liquid Garden taproom in Tampa's Seminole Heights neighborhood has permanently closed as of Nov. 1, ending a run of just over three years for the small-batch brewing outpost.
The closure was reported by the Tampa Bay Times. The location marked the Tampa-born brewery's return to Seminole Heights, opening on May 5, 2023, according to an earlier tampabay.com report on the brewery's homecoming to the neighborhood.
When it opened, the Seminole Heights spot was billed as more than just another taproom. Florida Avenue Brewing Co. CEO Anthony Derby said at the time that the company planned to use the new brewery as an Innovation Center for small-batch brewing, according to coverage from craftbrewingbusiness.com. The outlet also reported the space at 4,000 square feet, while cltampa.com described the planned footprint as 3,000 square feet in earlier coverage of the taproom's soft opening — accounts that differ on the exact size. Regardless of square footage, the build-out was ambitious: tampabay.com reported the location was planned to include a full liquor bar in addition to the brewery's beer lineup.
Part of a Broader Wave of Tampa Bay Closures
The Liquid Garden's closure is not an isolated event. The same Tampa Bay Times report on the shutdown noted that it aligns with an increasing trend of similar taproom closures throughout Tampa Bay.
Hidden Springs Ale Works has also announced plans to close its Tampa Heights tasting room on Dec. 20 and search for a new location, according to cltampa.com, which reported the building recently got new owners with a different model in mind for the space. Southern Brewing & Winemaking, which had been pouring pints since 2011 per tampalatest.com, likewise announced it would close its doors in the coming weeks, with its owners saying in a statement that after three decades in the brewing industry, they had decided it was time to retire.
A Statewide and National Slide in Craft Beer
The Seminole Heights closure also lands against a backdrop of statewide decline. Florida craft breweries fell for the first time in over a decade, according to bizjournals.com, which tied the dip to a broader national downturn in both craft beer and the overall U.S. beer market. Still, the same outlet reported that Tampa Bay remains home to more than 100 breweries despite the closures, with some operators adjusting their business models to stay afloat.
Seminole Heights itself has seen this pattern before. 7venth Sun Brewery closed its Seminole Heights location on June 30, 2023, while keeping its Dunedin location open, per earlier Tampa Bay Times reporting. The evidence does not establish why Florida Avenue Brewing Co. decided to close the Liquid Garden taproom, and it remains unclear whether the move affects the brewery's other operations.
