Forty years after a small Eastern Shore fundraiser helped build a daycare center, Christmas in St. Michaels returns Dec. 11-13, 2026, with a street parade, a lighted boat parade, historic home tours and a gingerbread house competition filling the Talbot County village for its milestone weekend.
The 40th annual celebration is scheduled for Dec. 11-13, 2026, according to tourtalbot.org. As Eye On Annapolis reports, the event takes place throughout St. Michaels on Maryland's Eastern Shore and features decorated historic homes, gingerbread displays, shopping, seasonal dining, live music and parades on both land and water.
The weekend opens with an adults-only Gingerbread House Preview Cocktail Party at the St. Michaels Community Center, running Dec. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m., per the same report. Tickets cost $75 per person and include food, an early look at the gingerbread competition and a silent auction of donated creations. The public gingerbread display then opens at the community center Dec. 11 from 2 to 5 p.m., Dec. 12 from noon to 5 p.m., and Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with visitors invited to vote for their favorites in a people's choice award. There is no fee to enter the competition and no admission charge to view the display, according to Christmas in St. Michaels.
Street Parade and Boat Parade Anchor Saturday
The Talbot Street Parade kicks off at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 12, per tourtalbot.org's schedule. Eye On Annapolis reports the parade travels south from the Inn at Perry Cabin to Seymour Avenue, with Santa and Mrs. Claus closing out the procession, and that Talbot Street is closed to traffic along the route from 10:15 a.m. until noon that day.
That evening, the Lighted Boat Parade returns to St. Michaels Harbor at 6 p.m., showcasing boats decorated with holiday lights as it passes the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's campus, according to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The museum hosts its own Winter on the Chesapeake festival the same day from 1 to 7 p.m., featuring live music, food, drinks, crafts and shopping. Admission turns free after 5 p.m. specifically for viewing the boat parade, though the museum's exhibitions close during that window; advance online adult tickets run $22, compared with $24 at the door.
Breakfast With Santa, Church Events and a Classic Shore Dinner
Saturday morning also brings Breakfast with Santa at the St. Michaels Community Center from 8 to 10 a.m., aimed at children ages 4 to 9, while a separate breakfast is held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church from 7:30 to 10 a.m., per the Eye On Annapolis rundown. The Christ Church Christmas Bazaar runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day with fresh greenery, gifts and homemade baked goods, and the church also hosts a free holiday flute and organ concert at 2 p.m. featuring Dr. Thresa Bowers and Dr. Cora Bruner.
Hungry visitors can sit down to an Old-Fashioned Eastern Shore Christmas Dinner at Union United Methodist Church Parish Hall, 100 Fremont St., served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out. The $25 dinner includes roast turkey, Maryland fried oysters, homemade sides and desserts, with dine-in and carryout options available. On Sunday, Dec. 13, a Holiday Concert at St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 5 p.m. features the Talbot County Workshop Choir, directed by Leroy Potter, performing gospel music and traditional Christmas carols.
Shopping and a Tour of Historic Homes
The Marketplace and Sweet Shoppe at Granite Lodge on St. Mary's Square offers handmade gifts, holiday decorations, baked goods and specialty foods, operating Dec. 11 from noon to 3 p.m., Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the report.
The Christmas in St. Michaels Tour of Homes showcases holiday-decorated historic homes throughout the village, running Dec. 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets, which include shuttle transportation, a tour brochure, and admission to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the Classic Motor Museum and the St. Michaels Museum, cost $35 through Dec. 11 and $40 during the weekend itself, per Christmas in St. Michaels. Online ticket sales close Dec. 9 at noon. Pat Martin said the event brings abundant holiday spirit and warmth, inviting people to its long-running tour of decorated historic-district homes, according to the Eye On Annapolis report.
Four Decades of Fundraising for Local Nonprofits
Christmas in St. Michaels says its mission is to provide resources that help local nonprofit groups enhance quality of life for residents of the Bay Hundred community, according to the organization's about page. The weekend raises money for local nonprofits through ticket sales, sponsorships and community participation, with support from businesses including The Oaks Waterfront Hotel, Higgins & Spencer, Wildset Hotel & Ruse Restaurant, and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, among other community partners.
The organization says its annual fundraising weekend has raised more than $1.7 million for local nonprofit organizations since a daycare center was established in 1987, with an all-volunteer board of directors selecting grant recipients each year. Those grants have supported the Critchlow Adkins Children's Centers' St. Michaels site, the Bay Hundred Community Pool, and local school programs, among other organizations and projects. The Star Democrat has reported that the event was founded in 1986 as a community effort to raise money for a daycare facility, an effort that led to the creation of the Critchlow Adkins Children's Center at the St. Michaels school complex.
Following its 2025 celebration, Christmas in St. Michaels awarded financial grants to 19 local nonprofit organizations, the Star Democrat reported. A year earlier, the 2024 event raised $65,500 for 19 beneficiaries across the Bay Hundred area, according to the St. Michaels Community Center, which also noted that year's celebration ran Dec. 13-15 and included a house tour, breakfast with Santa, a marketplace, parades, a community dinner and gospel music — much the same mix organizers have built into this year's 40th anniversary weekend.
