A man is in custody after his girlfriend was shot and killed Thursday evening at a home on McLean Street in the St. Pauls community of Robeson County. St. Pauls Police Chief Michael Owens said the shooting happened around 7 p.m., and the suspect turned himself in to authorities afterward.
According to WPDE, the suspect left the home after the shooting with his own three children but left the victim's children inside the house. He is now being held at the Robeson County Detention Center after surrendering to authorities.
Police have not released the identities of either the victim or the suspect, and a motive for the shooting has not been disclosed. Investigators are still gathering statements from the victim's family members, per the same account, as the case remains active.
Sheriff's Office Lending a Hand
The Robeson County Sheriff's Office is assisting St. Pauls Police with the investigation, the station's report notes. No further details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting have been made public, and officials have given no timeline for when charges or additional information might be announced.
St. Pauls, a small town in Robeson County, has seen other violent incidents investigated by the same police department in recent months, though each has been treated as a separate case. In April, Chief Owens said a man was found shot in his vehicle near Keith Street and East Worth Street, a shooting WMBF reported he described as targeted; at the time, police said there were no suspects and the case remained open.
Earlier Case Saw an Arrest After Weeks
In another unrelated St. Pauls case, an attempted robbery and shooting on Sept. 17 in the 600 block of E. McRainey Street left one person hospitalized. WBTW reported that a suspect in that case, 24-year-old Quintien D. Glover of St. Pauls, later surrendered and was charged with first-degree attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.
There is no indication these earlier incidents are connected to Thursday's shooting on McLean Street. The investigation into the girlfriend's death remains ongoing, and police have not said when more information about the victim, the suspect, or a possible motive will be released.
