Statesville police are investigating after a person found with traumatic injuries near Museum Road and Millsaps Road on Friday night later died at a hospital, WCNC reported. The report says emergency responders treated the person at the scene before the hospital transport.
Investigators are speaking with a person of interest, but police said they are not looking for a suspect, according to WCNC. Those descriptions do not establish that the person of interest is suspected of a crime. Police have not publicly identified the person who died or explained how the injuries occurred.
What is known—and what is not
The circumstances behind the injuries, any determination about the manner of death, and further details about the person of interest remain undisclosed in the reporting available so far. Police have asked people with information to call (704) 878-3406 or submit an anonymous tip, WCNC reported.
As general North Carolina context, the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner says it investigates deaths due to injury or violence, as well as deaths that are suspicious, unusual or unattended by a medical professional. That statewide description does not establish whether the office has made a determination in this Statesville case.
A separate Statesville case provides a point of contrast
In a distinct incident on August 2, 2025, Statesville police said a shooting in the 1000 block of Fifth Street killed 51-year-old Surtonia Burton; the department reported that the identified suspect later died after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers approached. That case had publicly described circumstances unlike the still-unexplained injuries in the Museum Road investigation, and does not indicate a connection between the incidents.
