A pair of stolen Lexus vehicles, swapped mid-chase to try to shake California Highway Patrol officers, instead touched off a second pursuit through downtown Los Angeles that ended in a crash, foot chases and multiple arrests. The ordeal began around 2 a.m. on Oct. 21 in South Los Angeles and stretched across the city before it was over.

According to the New York Post, CHP South Los Angeles officers first tried to stop a white Lexus displaying a license plate that didn’t match the vehicle. Instead of pulling over, the driver ignored police commands and sped off at more than 80 mph, kicking off the chase. CHP later said investigators determined the white Lexus had been reported stolen, along with a second Lexus that would factor into the pursuit minutes later.

A Spike Strip and a Risky Car Swap

As the white Lexus fled, CHP officers deployed a spike strip near the interchange of Interstate 105 and 110, puncturing the vehicle’s left front tire, per the same report. Rather than stop, the suspects pressed on with a damaged tire and eventually abandoned the crippled white Lexus near 3rd Street and Lower Grand Avenue. From there, the suspects transferred into a second vehicle — a gray Lexus — in an apparent attempt to ditch the CHP units still tracking them.

The swap didn’t work. CHP said officers attempted to stop the second vehicle, but its driver immediately fled, initiating a second pursuit through downtown Los Angeles. A law enforcement helicopter had tracked the fleeing white Lexus before the car swap. The second driver reached speeds approaching 80 mph along the way.

Crash Near Broadway Triggers Foot Chases

That second pursuit ended when the gray Lexus crashed near Broadway and College Street. Multiple suspects ran from the wreck, scattering on foot and triggering a series of foot pursuits through the surrounding streets, the outlet reported.

South Los Angeles officers apprehended two suspects, while additional CHP personnel detained several others who had fled the crash scene. Investigators determined that both Lexus vehicles involved in the chase had been reported stolen, and both displayed license plates that did not correspond to their assigned vehicle identification numbers — a detail that first drew CHP’s attention to the white Lexus in South Los Angeles.

Charges Suspects Could Face

The suspects face charges including felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of stolen vehicles, conspiracy, and resisting or delaying officers, according to the report.

Car-swap tactics and stolen-Lexus pursuits have turned up elsewhere in Los Angeles in recent years. In an August 2024 chase through South Los Angeles, a driver of a stolen vehicle led police on a pursuit before ditching a black Lexus in a Walgreens parking lot and climbing into the backseat of a white Lexus, as NBC Los Angeles reported at the time. That white Lexus driver then topped 80 mph while driving the wrong way on surface streets. Separately, CBS Los Angeles reported that a stolen Lexus crashed into another driver during a pursuit near downtown Los Angeles, while a separate CBS Los Angeles report detailed a South Los Angeles pursuit that ended with four people detained after a chase that included gunfire and a crash involving an officer. It is not established whether any of those earlier incidents are connected to the Oct. 21 pursuit.
