A SWAT standoff gripped a quiet stretch of northeast Houston Wednesday morning after Precinct 3 deputies went looking for a wanted fugitive and found themselves facing a barricaded home instead. Residents of the Evergreen Villas subdivision were told to stay sheltered in place as armed SWAT officers were at the scene, deployed a robot to breach the front door, and prepared a specialized tool to force open the garage.
The situation unfolded at about 8:30 a.m. in the 10300 block of White Fir Villa, according to ABC13. The Harris County Precinct 3 Constable's Office said deputies had gone to the residence searching for a wanted fugitive, according to the station's report. FOX 26 Houston reported that deputies were attempting to serve a felony warrant when the suspect reportedly barricaded himself inside and refused to come out.
Harris County Constable Sherman Eagleton described heavy police presence in Evergreen Villas along White Fir Villa Avenue, between Beltway 8 East and C.E. King Parkway, per FOX 26 Houston. At publication, the suspect's identity had not been released, and authorities asked residents to avoid the area while the operation continued.
Robot and “The Rook” Deployed at the Home
Aerial footage captured by SkyEye13 showed a small robot breaching the home's front door, followed by four armed SWAT officers moving in behind it, the same report noted. About 15 minutes later, officers were seen preparing to use a device called The Rook to pry open the garage door.
At the time of the report, it remained unclear whether officers had made contact with the suspect inside or whether anyone else, including potential hostages, was in the home. Residents in the subdivision were asked to remain sheltered during the operation.
Similar Standoffs Elsewhere in Harris County
The Evergreen Villas incident follows a string of recent barricade situations across Harris County. In one case, SWAT units responded to the Channelview area after a suspect refused to exit a home when deputies arrived to serve a warrant, per the same outlet's separate report. Deputies had gone to Reigate Lane near Dell Dale Street at about 1 p.m. that Monday, and the Harris County Sheriff's Office said no one else was inside that residence, though officials never identified the suspect or the reason for the original warrant.
Another standoff played out in Cypress, where Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said officers were serving a felony warrant on a man who may have barricaded himself inside a home on Coleburn Drive near Telge Road and Tuckerton Road, according to CW39. That man, who had an open felony warrant for Continuous Violence Against Family and another for Misdemeanor Theft, was ultimately taken into custody safely, CW39 reported. The Channelview and Cypress cases illustrate a pattern of warrant-related standoffs.
As of the latest reporting, the outcome of the Evergreen Villas standoff had not been confirmed. Residents in the area were still being urged to stay clear while deputies worked to resolve the situation.
