Neighborhood parents and kids in Lakewood have spent weeks weighing in on swing sets, climbing structures and layout options for a new playground at Tietze Park, and organizers say that input has finally produced a design everyone can get behind. The project now carries funding support of up to $300,000 from the city, with the final look expected to be unveiled once a few last details with the vendor are ironed out.

The announcement came in a Facebook post from Rudy Karimi, Dallas Park and Recreation Board member for District 14, who wrote that the Tietze Park playground project had reached full agreement on a final design. Karimi and Mike Walker, who is affiliated with the nonprofit Friends of Tietze Park, held a second community input meeting on the project, during which attendees reviewed additional playground renderings and weighed different features before landing on a direction.

Those sessions built on groundwork the nonprofit had already laid. According to Friends of Tietze Park, Dallas City Council had passed funding for a new playground with a budget of up to $300,000, and the group reported holding one formal presentation plus two informal presentations at park events to gather feedback before taking it to the vendor. The group said it had taken that community feedback to the vendor and expected a proposal to bring back to residents, writing that it should have a proposal soon to bring back to the community.

Dozens of Suggestions, One Design

Community meeting participants contributed dozens of suggestions during the process, according to the Facebook post, and neighborhood parents and children are credited with shaping the final outcome. At the meeting, attendees reviewed additional playground renderings and weighed different features before selecting a direction.

Friends of Tietze Park says funds for the new playground were expected to become available in October 2026.

Part of a Bigger District 14 Push

The Tietze Park playground is planned as the second of five new playgrounds coming to Dallas's District 14, with the Cochran Heights Neighborhood Association and Friends of Exall Park identified as next in line for similar projects. The scale of that citywide effort showed up on a Dallas Park and Recreation Board agenda for October 8, which included a proposal for five citywide playground construction-services contracts worth up to $20,926,500, according to a Dallas Park and Recreation Board meeting video.

A Park With a Track Record of Community Input

This isn't the first time Tietze Park amenities have moved forward through a public back-and-forth. Dallas Park and Recreation approved a sand volleyball court for the Lakewood-area park in June 2023 after several community input meetings, as reported by the Lakewood Advocate. That approval followed community input meetings where Karimi and Friends of Tietze Park representatives gathered feedback, the outlet noted at the time.

Construction on the volleyball court ran from December 4, 2023, to February 23, 2024, with costs split evenly between private donations and the park department's 2017 bond funding, the publication reported. The installation had been estimated at around $40,000 to $45,000 back in 2022, with Friends of Tietze Park raising $25,000 on its own and the city contributing a matching $25,000.
