A 10-year-old boy was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after running into the street and being struck by an eastbound truck on Manhattan Avenue in Toledo. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Manhattan and Mulberry, sending the child to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to WTVG, the boy suffered multiple broken bones and injuries to his face, according to the Toledo Police Department. Officials said the truck driver had the green light at the time the boy ran across the street, meaning the child entered the roadway against the signal.
Road Closed as Investigators Worked the Scene
Eastbound Manhattan was shut down at Mulberry as of 4:10 p.m. Wednesday while crews and investigators remained on scene. An accident reconstructionist responded to the site of the crash that afternoon, the station's report notes, a step typically taken to piece together exactly how the collision unfolded.
No crash-report number, citation, or broader investigation outcome had been released as of the station's report, and it remains unclear how long the road closure lasted or what the boy's current condition is beyond the injuries described by police at the scene.
Another Toledo Pedestrian Crash This Year
Wednesday's crash is not an isolated incident in Toledo this year. In August, a man was struck by a silver car while crossing southbound near Heatherdowns and Cheyenne before 1 p.m., per the same outlet's coverage. In that case, the driver was not injured and stopped at the scene along with another witness, while the pedestrian was taken to an area hospital with injuries described at the time as unknown.
The city has pointed to broader safety efforts in recent years through its Vision Zero initiative. Per the City of Toledo, officials have compiled data from ODOT and Toledo Police Traffic Collision Reports on fatal and serious-injury crashes between 2020 and 2024, with stated priorities including speed management, pedestrian and bike safety, access management, and intersection safety. A related dashboard maintained by the City of Toledo's data portal displays that same crash data for informational purposes, though it does not break out figures specific to the Manhattan and Mulberry intersection.
