Firefighters in Jacksonville's Mandarin neighborhood scrambled to contain a two-alarm blaze at an apartment complex Thursday, with crews still working the scene as the cause and whether anyone was hurt remained unknown.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department was on scene of the fire at an apartment complex in the Mandarin area, according to First Coast News. A two-alarm designation signals that the initial response wasn't enough to bring the situation under control, prompting a second wave of firefighters, trucks and equipment to be sent in.
As of the report, fire officials did not yet know whether anyone was hurt in the fire, nor did they know how it started. First Coast News said its crew was already on the scene and planned to provide updates as more information becomes available.
A Pattern of Apartment Fires in Mandarin
Thursday's fire is not the only recent blaze to hit an apartment complex in the Mandarin area. In a separate incident, JFRD responded just after 3 p.m. on a Friday to a fire at MAA Belmont Apartments, according to Action News Jax. That fire is a separate event from Thursday's, and its details should not be read as describing the current incident.
In that earlier MAA Belmont fire, a fire department spokeswoman said the blaze was under control by about 4 p.m. No one was injured, though four adults and one child were displaced, and the fire damaged one of the complex's 12 multistory buildings, the outlet reported.
What Remains Unknown
For now, the cause and extent of Thursday's fire at the Mandarin apartment complex remain unconfirmed. Officials have not released information on injuries, displacements or damage tied to this specific incident. Hoodline will update this story as more details emerge from JFRD and local reporting.
