Two people are dead after a shooting at a Selma apartment complex early Saturday morning, with both victims later pronounced dead at the hospital. Officers responded to Chanticleer Apartments in the 1200 block of Woodrow Avenue at about 8 a.m. on October 31 and found one gunshot victim inside a vehicle, while a second victim arrived at the emergency room separately. Police have not released the identities of either victim.
According to the Montgomery Advertiser, officers who arrived at the complex found a vehicle with one gunshot victim inside, and that person was taken to Vaughan Hospital for treatment. A second victim reached the hospital by private vehicle rather than ambulance, the paper reported. Both people were pronounced dead at Vaughan, according to the same report, which also noted that police had not immediately released the victims’ names. The shooting marks the third time this year that gunfire has struck the Woodrow Avenue complex, though the exact relationship, if any, between the incidents remains unclear.
Investigation Details Still Scarce
As of Saturday, no additional details on a suspect, motive, or arrest had surfaced in connection with the shooting. The Montgomery Advertiser’s report, which first described the discovery of the vehicle and the hospital notifications, remains the primary public account of what happened at the scene. Anyone with information has been asked to call the Selma Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 334-876-1272 or CrimeStoppers at 334-215-7861.
A Complex With a Troubled Recent History
Saturday’s shooting is not the first act of violence recorded at Chanticleer Apartments. In September 2025, a drive-by shooting at the complex left one person dead and three others injured, according to WAKA. Just months later, in January, a nine-year-old girl was shot during a gunfight at the same complex; WAKA reported she was treated at a Birmingham hospital and later released.
Selma’s Violence Extends Beyond the Complex
The shooting also comes less than a month after a separate attack elsewhere in Selma claimed three lives. On October 3, a shooting at American Deli in Selma left three people dead, as reported by al.com. In that case, a person of interest was detained the following day after voluntarily meeting with investigators, per the same outlet. There is no confirmed connection between that shooting and Saturday’s deaths at Chanticleer Apartments.
For now, Saturday’s double homicide remains an open case, with police withholding the victims’ names and no public update on a motive or suspect. Residents and relatives are left waiting for further word from investigators as the small city continues grappling with a string of deadly shootings this fall.
