The cause of Tuesday’s fatal crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Hempfield Township remains undetermined. The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office said two people died after a vehicle crashed and caught fire near the Route 136 overpass shortly before 5 p.m.
A passing driver reported the wreck, and firefighters found both occupants dead inside the vehicle, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Their identities were still being established, and their names had not been released. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating; officials had not said what led to the crash.
A separate crash near the overpass
The location has been the scene of another fatal crash, but months earlier and under different circumstances. WTAE reported that a separate crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-76 near the Route 136 overpass around 2:30 a.m. on June 27, 2026. In that incident, an SUV traveled through a grassy embankment, struck a bridge abutment and rolled several times.
That June crash and Tuesday’s vehicle fire are distinct events. Their proximity does not establish a common cause or show a trend, and investigators have not yet determined what caused Tuesday’s crash.
