Two people were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening gunshot wounds Friday afternoon after a shooting in Charlotte's University City area, according to MEDIC. The shooting happened near off-campus student housing on Education Way, though key details — including a motive and whether anyone has been arrested — remain unclear.
MEDIC reported that two people suffered life-threatening injuries, according to WSOC-TV, which reported the shooting happened at about 4:15 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 10900 block of Education Way. WCNC reported that the cause of the shooting was unclear and that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department had not released information on the incident.
Not every outlet agreed on the timeline. WBTV reported that it wasn't immediately known what time the alleged shooting happened or how many people were involved, even as the station confirmed that MEDIC said two people were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries following the Friday afternoon shooting. First responders reportedly picked the two people up on Education Way in the University City area, per the same account.
Shooting Happened Near UNC Charlotte, Not On Campus
Education Way surrounds The Mill, an apartment complex described as near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus, the station's report notes. The university confirmed that the situation did not involve university housing, offering some reassurance to students and families even as the investigation into what happened remains open.
As of Friday evening, no additional details had been made available, WSOC-TV reported. WCNC similarly reported that officials had not said whether any suspects were arrested, leaving the circumstances of the shooting unresolved.
Second University City Incident Earlier This Year
Friday's shooting is not the only violent incident to hit Charlotte's University City area this year. An early morning double homicide was investigated at the Ashford Green apartments in the same part of north Charlotte, according to The Charlotte Observer, which reported that MEDIC pronounced both victims dead at the scene in that case.
In that earlier case, 21-year-old Evin Quarles was identified as a suspect in one of the shootings, turned himself in to police and was charged with first-degree murder, the Observer reported. That story, unrelated to Friday's shooting, was originally published in September. No such details have emerged in connection with Friday's incident on Education Way.
