Four members of a Ventura County family have been sentenced to state prison for running illicit massage businesses that prosecutors say served as a front for a commercial sex operation lasting more than a decade. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office says the four laundered the proceeds through financial institutions, life insurance policies, casinos and real estate deals, and that the case has established the basis for forfeiture of more than $1.25 million in seized assets.

The case traces back to 2020, when several law enforcement agencies received anonymous whistleblower letters alleging prostitution and human trafficking at massage businesses tied to the family, according to KTLA. What investigators eventually uncovered, prosecutors said, was an operation that had been running for more than a decade, recruiting and exploiting women who were foreign nationals from China for commercial sex.

A Ventura County jury ultimately convicted all four defendants, who share the surname Ma, of felony charges tied to the enterprise, including pimping and money laundering, KTLA reported. One defendant, Xiangwei Ma, was also convicted of mortgage fraud. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office said this week that all four have now been sentenced to state prison.

How the Money Moved

Investigators said the family didn't just pocket the proceeds — they spread them across a web of legitimate-looking channels. According to the Ventura County Star, the money moved through various financial institutions, life insurance policies, casinos and real estate transactions over the course of more than ten years, as the family worked together to recruit and exploit the women involved.

That pattern of laundering through multiple financial and property channels, rather than a single method, became central to the case prosecutors built. The newspaper's reporting echoes the broader description offered by investigators: a sprawling, long-running scheme designed to keep the true source of the money obscured.

Forfeiture and a Thank-You to Jurors

Court findings in the case established the basis for forfeiture of the defendants' interests in more than $1.25 million in seized currency, bank funds and life insurance cash values, according to a document posted by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. Senior Deputy District Attorney Rikole Kelly, who prosecuted the case, thanked jurors, a victim who testified and investigators involved in the probe.

“We are deeply grateful to the jurors for the extraordinary time, care, and hard work they devoted to this case,” Kelly said in a statement reported by KTLA. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced the sentences on November 4, 2026, after KTLA's October reporting indicated sentencing hearings, including one for Xiangwei Ma, were still scheduled for later in the fall.

Part of a Wider Pattern in Ventura County

This is not the first illicit massage-parlor case Ventura County prosecutors have brought. In 2022, a sibling-run massage parlor ring that reached across Southern California, including Oxnard and Port Hueneme, resulted in multiple sentences, with ringleader Olga Paredes receiving four years in state prison after pleading guilty to four felony pimping counts, per the Ventura County Star.

A separate investigation examined by FOX 11 Los Angeles also alleged sex labor trafficking at massage parlors and skin-care businesses elsewhere in the county, resulting in five arrests: Ira Malarowitz, Erika Malsrowitz, Alma Monarrez-Diaz, Melesio Monarrez-Diaz and Justin Malarowitz. Together, the cases point to a recurring problem investigators have flagged across the region's massage and wellness industry. In its November 4, 2026, release, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office stated that Xiangwei Ma was sentenced to 14 years 8 months, Xiangdong Ma to 10 years, Li Ma to 5 years 4 months, and Ming Ma to 4 years 4 months in state prison.
