A 47-year-old Vinita man is dead after the commercial vehicle he was driving crossed the centerline on Highway 28 in Mayes County Tuesday afternoon and slammed head-on into another vehicle. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers identified him as Justin Tune.

Troopers were called to the crash at Highway 28 and County Road N 432 around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to KOKH. Investigators say the commercial vehicle was traveling eastbound on Highway 28 when it crossed into the westbound lanes of traffic.

After crossing the centerline, the vehicle first hit a trailer attached to another vehicle before crashing head-on into a second vehicle, the station reports. Investigators identified Tune as the driver of the commercial vehicle and said he was killed in the crash.

A Rural Highway With a Grim Recent History

Tuesday's crash is not the only fatal wreck Mayes County has seen in recent weeks. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a 77-year-old Vinita man, Gary Goodman, died after a crash on Highway 82 near County Road 350, according to KTUL. Troopers said Goodman was driving around 2:52 p.m. Sunday when he crashed into another vehicle whose driver had run a stop sign; Goodman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver was not injured.

A separate multi-vehicle crash on a Saturday night in Mayes County killed two more people, per an Oklahoma Highway Patrol collision report cited by KOCO. That crash, which happened around 10:10 p.m. on Highway 82 east of County Road NS441.6 near Locust Grove, involved a 2014 Ford Flex and a 2017 Ford F-150. The outlet identified the two people killed as Christopher J. Crosley, 27, and Caleb James Bagley, 29, while two others riding in the F-150 were taken to a Tulsa hospital in stable condition.
