Walgreens held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week at 4741 Chapmans Road in South Whitehall Township, marking the opening of a new micro-fulfillment center that will use robotic technology to process prescriptions for stores across the region. The facility is expected to handle nearly 29 million prescriptions annually and support nearly 650 Walgreens stores across the region, including 55 locations in Pennsylvania.

As reported by WFMZ.com, the new facility is bringing about 185 new jobs to the area, according to a Walgreens spokesperson, though not all of those positions have been filled yet. Interested applicants can view openings on Walgreens' jobs website, where a pharmacist role for the Allentown Micro Fulfillment Pharmacy at the same Chapmans Road address is listed as remaining open until filled, according to Walgreens Careers.

Walgreens says employees at the site process, fill, and ship prescription orders to Walgreens stores with the help of robotic technology, part of a design the company says is meant to streamline prescription fulfillment. The idea, per the same account, is that centralizing routine prescription work frees up store-level pharmacists to spend more time with patients rather than behind the counter counting pills.

A Years-Long Path From Warehouse to Robotic Pharmacy

The Chapmans Road building wasn't originally built with pill-sorting robots in mind. The site had been approved back in 2019 under general guidelines for use as a standard warehouse, but local reporting noted that Walgreens needed new approval because the proposed tenant was a fulfillment center rather than a conventional distribution operation, according to Lehigh Valley Public Media.

That approval process culminated when South Whitehall Township commissioners granted final preliminary plan approval for the new use of the existing warehouse following a public hearing, the station's earlier report noted. Coverage of that approval put the space Walgreens planned to use at about 67,500 square feet, while a more recent account from Chain Store Age described the completed center as 68,000 square feet — a discrepancy the available reporting does not resolve.

Part of a Broader Robotic Pharmacy Push

South Whitehall's facility is Walgreens' fifteenth micro-fulfillment center in the U.S., following similar openings in places like Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and Kent, Washington. Walgreens first rolled out the robot-powered centers in 2021 but paused expansion in 2023, according to CNBC, which reported that as of February 2025 the centers were handling an average of 40% of prescription volume at the pharmacies they supported.

Nationally, the network has scaled up fast. Walgreens' 15 centers now support more than 5,500 stores and fulfill more than 18 million prescriptions each month, per Chain Store Age, which also reported the company's micro-fulfillment centers processed more than 200 million prescriptions in fiscal year 2026. Chain Drug Review has reported that Walgreens frames the strategy as creating more capacity for its pharmacists to focus on supporting patients, providing personalized care, and expanding access to clinical services, according to Chain Drug Review.

How South Whitehall Compares to Other New Sites

The Pennsylvania facility's scale lands in the middle of Walgreens' recent expansion. The company's Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, center is expected to support nearly 200 stores across the Midwest, including 145 in Minnesota, and process about 13 million prescriptions a year while bringing more than 175 jobs to that area, according to Walgreens Corporate.

A facility in Kent, Washington, is expected to process about 7 million prescriptions annually and support nearly 196 stores, including 122 in Washington, according to Supply Chain Dive. By comparison, South Whitehall's nearly 29-million-prescription target and 650-store reach make it one of the larger hubs in Walgreens' growing robotic network.
