Hospitals of Providence has announced plans for a new emergency room in West El Paso, set to open inside a former CVS pharmacy at the Crossroads Shopping Center along North Mesa Street. The facility is designed to serve the Upper Valley along with nearby Sunland Park and Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and will become the hospital network's 11th emergency room location in El Paso once it opens in 2027.

According to KVIA, Hospitals of Providence plans to break ground on the project in 2027, with crews remodeling the interior of the existing building while keeping its structure intact, per Nicholas Tejeda, Western Group President for Tenet Healthcare. The site at 8041 N. Mesa St. previously operated as a CVS pharmacy, the station reports. Once complete, the emergency room will offer eight beds and round-the-clock care for both adults and children.

On-Site Labs and Imaging Planned for the New Location

The new emergency room is also expected to include onsite imaging and laboratory services, allowing patients to get diagnostic testing without being routed elsewhere, the station's report notes. Those same on-site capabilities — imaging and lab testing available directly at the facility — were also highlighted by Noticias El Paso, which reported that the facility will serve both El Paso's Upper Valley residents and the neighboring border communities of Sunland Park and Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Tejeda said the location was chosen in part to address a specific headache for West Side residents: getting to a hospital quickly while Interstate 10 construction drags on. Per the same account, cutting hospital travel time by even a few minutes can make a meaningful difference during a medical emergency, Tejeda said.

Ongoing I-10 Construction Cited as a Driving Factor

Speaking to Noticias El Paso, Tejeda framed the project as a direct response to road conditions that have made reaching a traditional hospital more difficult. “Las obras continuas sobre la interestatal 10 y el incremento del tráfico dificultan llegar a un hospital tradicional en una emergencia. Con esta nueva sala esperamos aliviar esa carga,” he told the outlet — saying ongoing I-10 construction and rising traffic make it harder to reach a traditional hospital during an emergency, and that the new facility is meant to ease that burden.

The Crossroads project will mark the fifth emergency room Hospitals of Providence has developed through its coinvestment arrangement with Emerus, according to Noticias El Paso. That partnership has already produced another recent addition to the network: the Gateway emergency room, which opened as the system's 10th El Paso location and its fourth built under the same joint venture, according to KVIA.

How the New Site Compares to Gateway

Reporting on the Gateway facility earlier this year put its bed count at 10. KVIA reported that officials described the Gateway location as a 10-bed emergency room, while Emerus described the same 10,899-square-foot project as a 10-bed neighborhood emergency room designed for 24/7 high-quality care. Emerus had said that facility was expected to open in fall 2026.

The Crossroads emergency room's eight planned beds would make it smaller than Gateway, based on the counts reported for that earlier project. For now, Hospitals of Providence's focus is on the West Side, where ongoing highway construction and traffic can make travel to a hospital challenging for residents on that side of the city.
