A former Williamsburg Christian Academy soccer coach is sitting in jail without bond after James City County police charged her with four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship. Shannon Rebekah Meyyar, now 47, was taken into custody Thursday following an investigation into an anonymous tip that she had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student years earlier.
According to 13News Now, James City County police allege the relationship involved a 17-year-old boy who played on Williamsburg Christian Academy's co-ed soccer team, which Meyyar coached. Investigators say the alleged incidents took place over several months in 2019, when Meyyar was 40 years old.
The station reports Meyyar was charged and taken into custody Thursday, and she is currently being held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond. The report does not indicate whether the anonymous tip that triggered the investigation led to any additional charges or further investigative steps.
What the School's Own Records Show
Williamsburg Christian Academy's own materials from 2019 complicate the picture of exactly which team Meyyar coached. A Williamsburg Christian Academy recap from that fall describes Meyyar working with the girls varsity volleyball program, writing that “Coach Shannon Meyyar worked hard with an expanded group of seniors and underclassmen.” The same article names Calvin Singleton as the new coach of the boys soccer team that season.
A separate school post from spring 2019, titled Four Eagles Named Student Athletes of the Month for April, May 2019, references a “Coach Shannon” in connection with the co-ed soccer team, noting that one student-athlete split her season between golf and that team. That post does not use a full name to identify the coach. Neither school document independently confirms the alleged relationship described by police, and no response from Meyyar, an attorney, or the school is included in the available reporting.
The Charges She Faces
The charges against Meyyar fall under Virginia Code, which, in the excerpt made available, describes conduct by a person age 18 or older who maintains a custodial or supervisory relationship over a child under 18 and who, with lascivious intent, knowingly and intentionally proposes certain sexual acts. That excerpt is incomplete, so the full scope of the statute and its penalties cannot be established from it.
