A Wilmington mother went into active labor at her Lowell Street home in the middle of the night on Oct. 28, and two police officers and a pair of calm-voiced dispatchers helped deliver a healthy baby boy. Now the department wants to bring everyone back together to mark the moment.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, Officer Jack Rooney responded to the Lowell Street home at approximately 2:25 a.m. after a call came in that a woman was in active labor, as confirmed by the Wilmington Police Department. Before he even got there, Wilmington dispatchers Jared Winston and Joseph Leverone were providing instructions to the mother and father, helping them through those tense, fast-moving minutes.

Officer Kyle Collins, also with the Wilmington, Massachusetts Police Department, arrived moments after Rooney to lend a hand at the scene. By approximately 2:30 a.m., just five minutes after Rooney's arrival, a healthy baby boy was born inside the home.

Fire and Ambulance Crews Take Over From There

Wilmington Fire and Action Ambulance crews transported both mother and newborn to an area hospital for further care, per the department's account. The overnight response — dispatchers giving instructions, officers responding to the address, and firefighters and paramedics assisting at the scene — unfolded in a matter of minutes before either crew had a chance to catch its breath.

Reunion Planned at Public Safety Building

The department says the family, the two officers, the two dispatchers, and the EMS personnel involved will all reunite Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Wilmington Public Safety Building. It is billed as a chance for everyone who played a role that night to come back together under far calmer circumstances than their first meeting.

Details beyond the department's account remain limited — the family's names, the baby's name, and the hospital that treated mother and son have not been made public. Whether Thursday's planned reunion ultimately takes place as scheduled has also not yet been confirmed.
