A woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a shooting on the 900 block of Royal Street in Annapolis Monday evening, and police say she was flown to a trauma center for treatment. Officers remained on scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and authorities say there is no threat to the public.
The Annapolis Police Department reported the incident at approximately 6 p.m., according to Eye On Annapolis, which said officers were on the scene investigating. Police said the adult woman was being transported by air to a trauma center for treatment of her life-threatening injuries. Authorities had not released additional details about the shooting, including what led up to it, as of the outlet's report.
A separate account gives a different timeline, stating that officers arrived at approximately 10:30 p.m. and discovered a victim with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, with the unidentified person airlifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. That report's web address is dated 2025, and the discrepancy between the two timelines has not been resolved.
No Threat to the Public, Authorities Say
Despite the severity of the victim's injuries, authorities indicated there was no threat to the public. No suspect information, motive, or further circumstances had been released at the time of reporting, and the case remains under investigation.
This is not the first time Royal Street has seen gunfire. On October 1, 2022, Annapolis police responded to a shooting in the same 900 block at approximately 3:20 a.m., when a gunman fired at a tow truck and struck the vehicle. The victim in that earlier incident was not injured, per the same outlet's reporting at the time.
A Broader Pattern of Shootings in Annapolis
Monday's shooting comes roughly a year after a string of Annapolis shootings drew scrutiny to the city's gun violence. In September 2023, a 52-year-old woman was shot while walking into her apartment building at the Harbour House community, with officers responding at 9:26 p.m., according to The Baltimore Sun. She was reported in stable condition, and that shooting was described as the sixth incident in which someone was killed or injured since Annapolis implemented its summer crime plan on July 14, 2023. Before that plan took effect, the city had already recorded seven homicides and 14 nonfatal shooting victims that year, the Sun reported.
City officials have since touted progress on that front. Annapolis police recorded six gun-violence incidents during an 18-week summer crime-reduction initiative in 2026, down from 18 during the same period in 2025, according to The Capital Gazette. The department reported that gun violence, violent crime, and theft were all lower during the initiative, which also expanded community outreach efforts.
Monday's shooting on Royal Street arrives just weeks after that initiative wrapped, underscoring that gun violence remains a persistent concern for the city even amid reported improvements. No further updates on the victim's condition or the investigation had been released as of this report.
