"We were walking up Grove to the intersection with Octavia. About 20 feet from the intersection I saw a man running in a hoodie with his hand held up in front of him. Within less than a second, the sound of shots rang out as the man in the hoodie ran away from us towards the intersection, shooting somewhat randomly... It appeared to me that he was shooting at a group of folks partying outside a home halfway up the next block... Once he reached the intersection he stopped shooting and headed north on Octavia."At least two of the bullets struck nearby vehicles, according to the witnesses -- though they believe this may have been unintentional.
"Two cars were hit: one was random, just turning through the intersection, and the other was parked without anyone in it."The witnesses immediately called 9-1-1, but by the time police arrived, the gunman had fled the scene. SF Appeal reports that one male victim was struck in the leg by the gunfire and taken to the hospital. It's unclear whether the victim was among the group of bystanders up the block, or an occupant of one of the vehicles, or neither. This incident comes at the end of what proved to be a violent day in the area, with an 18-year old woman being shot on Eddy and Webster around 9pm, a rider reporting shots fired at the #31 Muni bus around the same time and location (which may have been part of the same incident), and a 43-year-old man shooting himself in the leg while waiting for a haircut (???) at Fillmore and Geary around 2:37pm. There's no word yet on the condition of any of the victims or whether any of these incidents are connected. We'll update this story with any additional details.
