Steiner Street Redwoods To Be Removed?
Three California redwood trees on Steiner Street are scheduled to be removed and replaced with two smaller trees, pending the outcome of a public hearing tomorrow.

The trees are located on the eastern side of Steiner Street between Page and Oak, adjacent to the City CarShare parking lot. They are of the species Sequoia sempervirens, otherwise known as the California redwood or coast redwood. The species includes the tallest trees on earth. Last week, the Department of Public Works wrapped the Steiner Street trees with flyers announcing a hearing to consider:
"Removal of three (3) Sequoia sempervirens significant trees with replacement of two (2) smaller stature trees at 640 Page St. (Staff has approved the removal and the public has protested)"
No reason is given for the trees' proposed removal. They look healthy to us, but we're no dendrologists. (That would be Caleb.) The hearing will take place tomorrow, January 23rd, at 5:30pm in City Hall, Room 416. If you can't make the meeting, but still want to comment, you can submit your feedback in writing to the Bureau of Urban Forestry, 2323 Cesar Chavez St. We'll update with the results of tomorrow's hearing. Update: Sometimes we screw up. Case in point: getting this hearing date wrong by a week! As a commenter pointed out, today, of course, is January 30th. Therefore, the hearing was last week. We'll look into whether a decision was made on the trees' fate.
