The Future of Bookstores: Community Forum and Art Reception Tonight
This year, the Booksmith at 1644 Haight turns 35. Tonight, at 7:00, the folks at the Booksmith invite you to gawk at store artist Sean Chiki's chalk signage around the store, talk book-selling, and enjoy some celebratory wine and refreshments.

Owners Christin Evans and Praveen Madan, who took over the Booksmith in 2007, will be in house to answer questions and hear feedback about how bookstores in general and the Booksmith specifically is faring in an era in which e-books are available for a dollar, Amazon declares it wants to be the only bookseller in the book selling business, and op-ed writers are sparring over the viability of a brick-and-mortar model in the 21st century.
Sean Chiki will also be there to humbly present the work that's taken him more than two years to complete (whilst balancing atop a ladder, we might add): the breathtaking chalk signage around the store, featured above. You can see a bit more of it here. Did we mention there'll be wine? We hope to see you there!
