This year's 35th annual cacophony of food, art, live music, crafts, bouncy castles, bathroom lines, and other excitements takes over Haight Street from Stanyan to Masonic on Sunday, June 10th from 11AM-6PM, and 90,000 attendees are expected. We'll let all those zeroes sink in, and then tell you everything else we know about the fair.
First off: the poster contest. The deadline is this Thursday, April 12th. It's open to everyone, and ten finalists will be chosen to be displayed publicly at RVCA. One winner will be chosen by a panel of judges appointed by the Haight Ashbury Street fair. If you win, you get $500, and a $100 gift card to Mendel's. Also, runners up will get to be on postcards for the fair. You can see the rest of the entry rules here, or pick up a copy at Mendel's. The contest for the children's poster is similar, with the winner being chosen by a panel of judges. The winner gets a $150 prize, and a $50 gift certificate to Mendel's. More info on the kids' poster contest here. If you need some inspiration for your poster designs, Mendel's has a list of past winners on their website you can peruse. As for the bands that will be performing, you can help decide! Basically, all the bands perform at the Blue Macaw in the Mission for the next few upcoming Thursdays, and the band from each night that gets the biggest crowd response will be considered for the two open performance slots on the day of the fair. You may have missed the first two shows (on March 22 and April 5th), but you can still catch the last three, on April 198th, 26th, and May 3rd at 9:30PM ($10 cover, sliding scale). Here is a schedule of the bands that will be performing at Blue Macaw's each night, and you can apply to perform here. More than 100 vendors set up shop each year for the fair, and it's not too late to apply to be one of them. Deadline is May 7th, and the application can be found on the street fair's website. And finally, we have it on good authority that the Show-Us-Your-Boobs-It's-Okay-We're-Gay guys above Ben & Jerry's will be there with prizes, as usual. So, are you excited? Or do you hide out with your blinds drawn during Haight Street Fair? What do you want to see happen this year?
