It's a new year, and the SFPD are making themselves more present on the street.
Officers Hastings and Parker are the Park Station's latest additions to the beat cops of Haight Street. They made rounds up and down the street yesterday afternoon, introducing themselves to merchants and announcing a renewed police presence on the street--this time in the form of a foot patrol, and not just the periodic drive-by or call-in assistance we've seen the past couple of years in the neighborhood. This seems to be part of the larger effort to increase police presence, reported on by our brethren at Haighteration among others. You can expect to see a more full-time beat cop presence starting immediately. While they were tight-lipped about the bureaucratic fine points of what made a larger presence possible on the street, they indicated that it was, in part, a response to an increased transient population and low-level disturbances in the Upper Haight. We're eager to see what kind of impact this might have on crime in the 'hood. If you have a non-emergency call to make, the Park Station's number is 553-0123. As always, 911 for emergencies.
