It's been a rough week down at the recycling center. The Sheriff's Department went through with eviction proceedings last Wednesday, and yesterday Rec and Park showed up with a bulldozer.
They carted away some valuables and then demolished HANC's plant nursery while stunned residents protested. ABC News was there to cover the arrest of several protesters, and you can watch a video and hear interviews with community members at the link. We also spoke to Martha Hoffman, who is interviewed in the Abc video. She commented on the irony of Rec and Park's decision to demolish flower beds when they intend to put in a community garden. She described the scene, and told us a few people had tried to stand in front of bulldozers, though ABC reports only one person did that. The photo at the top of the post is from a set on flickr by user Steve Rhodes, who took 58 photos in the last few days before the center was leveled. You can look at them here. They're sort of surreal to look at, now that the center is gone for good.
