Introducing Shipwreck
Tomorrow at Booksmith: Competitive Erotic Fanfiction, featuring your second-favorite Uppercasing editor Camden Avery.

It's called Shipwreck. Basically, here's how it works. The event is produced and hosted by yours truly, along with the folks who run Write Club SF, a monthly competitive writing series housed at the Make-Out Room. Six writers are each assigned a character from the particular book being destroyed. The writers compose a fic shipping that character with anyone they want - in the book's universe, or anywhere else. Then, on the night of the event, Steve Westdhal of Write Club, a real-deal Shakespearean actor, reads them aloud, anonymously. The crowd votes for their favorite fic, and the winner gets to come back and defend his or her title. Last month the books was The Great Gatsby. Tomorrow, it's The Hobbit. Carolyn Ho, poet and Booksmith employee, won by a wide margin. Tomorrow, she comes back to take the Hobbit places it was never meant to go. The other writers participating are Matt Dowd, Ignacio Zulueta, Lauren Traetto, Camden Avery, and one secret competitor who won't be revealed until the show. You can watch a video of the first event over at Litseen. The fun starts at 7pm at Booksmith. It's $10 at the door, which gets you an open bar, two hours of watching amazing writers squirm as their erotica gets read out loud in front of them, and some rowdy fun for literate perverts. You can RSVP on Facebook, or buy tickets ahead of time at brownpapertickets. We'll see you there!
