There's nothing especially sexy or surprising about a fire-damaged building being renovated. After all, we watched this one for nearly two years, reporting on its progress again and again and again. And again. And again. But when the apartments at 493 Haight Street finally hit the market in September, the sticker shock -- $3,995 for a "1-bedroom" (actually a studio) -- hit our readers hard. "Glad to see they were able to capitalize on tragedy." "Guess the greedy owners are trying to make up for lost time. Pricks!" "Those rents are ridiculous I don't care how much money they put into the building!" And tapping into a common theme this year, many readers blamed the skyrocketing rent on the city's current tech boom. While 4,500 people apparently "liked" this story on Facebook, we suspect most of those were actually dislikes -- making this our most popular, or perhaps unpopular, story of 2013. Enjoy.
