After some permitting gymnastics, a longer-than-expected closure and a substantial overhaul, Bacon Bacon is about to be back in business.
That's right, the bacon specialty restaurant will finally be re-opening its doors, more than a year after hearing opposition from neighbors and going through the city permitting process to remain in the 'hood.
Owner Jim Angelus is targeting April 1 for the Big Day at 205 A Frederick Street. "That's the plan," Angelus said, pending, of course, the timeline for construction, which is still well underway. We're going to get you some updates and a look at the inside closer to the opening, but for now that's top-secret.
What we can tell you is that the space will feel bigger inside: Angelus said they removed the dividing middle wall previously used to have a space to service the food truck. Instead, they will now have two trucks operating out of SOMA, and an even baker's dozen in cafe seating in the shop.
Asked what he's most looking forward to about the upgrade, Angelus told us it was "seeing all the people that I've missed" in the neighborhood: "I'm only reopening because the people in the neighborhood supported me so much," he said.
To that end, rather than a big grand opening, he's going to relaunch first with a couple of soft openings, he's thinking, to get things off the ground: a few neighborhood events, first, to celebrate his closest patrons.
As to new items on the menu, Angelus said he was looking forward to offering different cures of uncooked bacon for sale (including his favorite, marinated chimichurri), and a wider dessert selection in addition to the famous sandwiches.
Most of all, he said, he's excited about "being more creative and fun in the space," trying new ideas and innovating more.
