Upper Haight Sunday Odds & Ends

This weekend's odds and ends include a new tree, a rash of car break-ins, a new hike and the first weekend of spring.

First we're happy to announce that the tree in front of Land of the Sun has finally been replaced (above), even if we still lost a nice old tree and a big carbon sink. Maybe with the new city funding we'll see some progress replacing the two that were taken down on the north side of Haight and Cole (Wells Fargo) and the row removed at Haight and Masonic.

Second, we report that if you seem to have observed more car break-ins than usual lately, you're not alone. Based on reports filed by the SFPD it looks like there's been a recent, local spike not only in attempted burglaries but also in car break-ins.

In fact, twice last week we saw someone walking up and down Haight Street at around 1pm pulling car door handles all the way up and down the street to see if anything was left unlocked: after lifting the purse out of the front of a white minivan and being confronted by the driver, he put the bag back and wandered off. The man we saw was in his early 30's, 6'2", Caucasian with tangled red hair and a reddish complexion. Twice we've seen him wearing black yoga pants and a baggy brown or black hoodie.

In more delightful news, it's also spring. We recommend celebrating by going for a hike on this (for us) newly discovered little gem: head over to Stanyan and walk up the hill to 17th Street. Just past, on your right, you'll find the Stanyan Trailhead. Say "goodbye" to the world and wander inside a 100-year-old urban rainforest, the remaining 80 acres of a once 1,100-acre expanse of trees.
