Hold on to your hats, kids: today is the 103rd Bay to Breakers race, and it's upon us, just as sure as you're sitting here reading this.
If you're not locking yourself inside or evacuating to another county for the day, here are some things you'll want to know.
As you know, Alamo Square is being blocked off this year, which we anticipate will have the effect of concentrating crowds (even more) in the Panhandle and Golden Gate Park. Even though event sponsors are expecting a turnout roughly the size of last year's, it might look different for us here.
The SFPD have announced a "strict" no-alcohol policy but acknowledged the difficulty of enforcing it with the sheer number of people, saying that instead of focusing on individuals they're likely to shut down keggers and impromptu bars in the Panhandle and Golden Gate Park. (Entrepreneurs beware.) Said Captain Greg Corrales, "The sheer number of people are going to outnumber [the SFPD]."
During the same meeting last week, Corrales also said the Park Station would be receiving supplemental support from other parts of the city, as well as some private security teams.
There's also going to be particular attention, we expect, toward rooftop parties, especially given the incident last year where a man fell four floors to his death from an apartment building on Fell. So be careful and play safe.
Oh yeah, and don't forget the sunscreen.
