There have been tons of maps and statistical info coming out about San Francisco neighborhoods, infrastructure, and income recently. For us data-geeks, this feels like a goldmine.
One such source that caught our eye was this recent study from Paragon Real Estate. In it, they examined median household incomes in San Francisco from 2010 - 2013, and managed to break it down by zip code.
We took a look at good ol' 94117, and here's what we learned.

The median income for 94117 is $91,300, which ranks 6th as the highest earning zip code in San Francisco. This is well above the national average of $53,000, and the San Francisco average of $73,800.
Possibly related: 72% of 94117 residents have a Bachelor's Degree or higher, and 28% have a Graduate or Professional Degree. This ranks us at #5 in the city for higher education. Interestingly enough, the Presidio ranks as #1 for higher education in San Francisco, but slips down to #3 for income, shaking up the theory that higher education = higher income.
Another interesting fact to note is that only 29% of 94117 residents own their houses. Any other zip code in the country with a $91k annual income would see this number as much higher. But as the average 2-bedroom home in our neighborhood costs over $1 million, this could be a sign that despite our higher-than-average income, it's still not enough to justify purchasing a home.
Or perhaps age is a factor, as the average age of residents in this zip code is only 33 years old. As you can see in the chart below, we also have an average of 2 people per household, implying that many residents of 94117 may not have started families yet, limiting the desire to purchase a home.

As Curbed points out, "zip codes are often random and can include wildly diverse neighborhoods within their bounds." With this in mind, remember that 94117 includes a diversity of residents who can't be pinned down to numbers alone. Still, it's interesting to take a step back and statistically look at who we are as a group of neighborhoods.
