A few of you have noticed hammering noises coming from the FTC skate shop at all hours of the day, as well as staggering amounts of lumber being delivered. Well, you're not imagining it: another pop-up skate park is currently being erected in the outdoor space behind the building at 1632 Haight.
As you may remember, last year FTC hosted a Levi's-sponsored skate competition wherein the skate shop turned Sparrow's deck into a viewing area and awarded the winner $10,000. It was supposed to be a one-day only affair, but the ramps stayed around for about a week, at which point they were torn down and donated to local schools.
We reached out to FTC's Kent Uyehara again to find out about this year's event. Uyehara says that this year, he wants to try and keep the exact date of the event a secret in order to keep crowds under control (the event is again invite-only). He did, however, confirm that it's coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Uyehara has sent out letters to neighbors to warn them of noise and commotion, and has also notified the SFPD, the SFFD, relevant city departments, and London Breed's office about the event. If it's anything like last year, there will be some music and some yelling for a few hours, with no major incidents.
This time around, Uyehara promises to let us snag some photos of the finished park and the competition, so stay tuned for that sometime in the coming weeks.
