A Hoodline reader suggested we round up some worthy San Francisco causes that need assistance on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. So, we did some digging.

While many of the local organizations we checked with happily report that they have all the help they need this week, we did find a few that are still looking for volunteers:

San Francisco City Impact

From 8:30am to 2pm tomorrow, this Tenderloin-based organization aims to deliver 5,000 hot meals, serve 300 sit-down Christmas dinners, distribute 500 bags of groceries, and give out toys to 300 children. To achieve these ambitious goals, lots of volunteers are needed across a variety of tasks, from meal delivery to ushering. Click here to sign up.

Salvation Army

The organization plans to provide 4,000 San Franciscans with meals tomorrow, and could use help with both preparation and delivery. The meal prep shift runs from 5am to 10am at the Salvation Army's central SoMa kitchen at 850 Harrison Street, while the delivery shift goes from 8am to 1pm. If you're interested in the latter, you'll just need your own vehicle and an assistant.

Larkin Street Youth Services

If you have any culinary skills, consider whipping up something for Larkin Street Youth Services. The organization is expecting to serve holiday meals to up to 100 youths staying in its shelters, and needs contributions like veggie enchiladas and cheesy broccoli and rice casserole. Dishes should be dropped off either this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Get more details here

Little Brothers

Spend tomorrow morning with an elderly San Franciscan who could use a little company this Christmas. Little Brothers provides volunteers with a gift bag and a rose to bring to an elder during a home visit between 10am and noon. You can do it alone, with a friend, or in a small group. Sign up here.

Episcopal Community Services

Most of their shifts for the next two days are already full, but if you're free the day after Christmas, consider serving breakfast to low-income and homeless S.F. residents at a local shelter. Both the Next Door Shelter at 1001 Polk Street and the Sanctuary Shelter at 201 8th Street have shifts available on the 26th. View the volunteer calendar here.

Of course, these and many other local organizations need volunteers year-round. To find opportunities near you, check sites like volunteermatch.org or sfheart.com, or give your local church or shelter a call.
