Celebrate MLK Day With These Neighborhood Events

Looking for things to do on your day off? Want to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy? Here are a few MLK Day events happening near you today.
Gardening at Koshland Park
This morning, join Community Grows for a day of service working in Koshland Gardens. Volunteers will get dirty with cleaning, mulching, planting veggies, composting and more.

Day of Service at the AAACC
The African American Art and Culture Complex is hosting its annual MLK national day of service, with volunteer opportunities from several community organizations. The volunteer activities are designed to unite people throughout the Western Addition community, including letter-writing to our troops, food prep and serving, walking and board games with seniors, neighborhood cleanups, and gardening. There will also be supervised fun and games for children in conjunction with Playworks in the AAACC parking lot.

Tiny Teach-In for MLK Day
Colorful Mamas of the 99%, the African American Art & Culture Complex, and Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco present Tiny Teach In: Families Reclaim MLK Day. Children will read books about race, difference, and civil rights, and have age-appropriate conversations. Parents will discuss ways to work together for racial equity in San Francisco. Event planned for ages 1-10, all are welcome.

Youth Speaks Brings The Noise
Later tonight, Youth Speaks, the country's leading spoken word and literary arts organization, will present Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the historic Nourse Auditorium. This event showcases young performers’ responses to Dr. King’s oratories. Featuring performances by Universes, Young Gifted and Black, members of the SF Jazz High School All-Stars, Youth Speaks alum Dahlak Brathwaite, Do D.A.T., Youth Speaks Grand Slam Champions, and more, the event will be hosted by Youth Speaks' own M.C. K~Swift with DJ Dion Decibels.

Free Selma Screenings 
Finally, if you're looking for an indoor activity for your 7th-9th grader, remember that they can can see Selma for free at AMC Van Ness 14 today (while tickets last). Students just need to show their IDs or report cards.
