The Lower Haight has been without a legitimate bakery since Roland's brief stint at 422 Haight way back in 2010. The dearth of bakeries has meant a similar dearth of doughnuts, in a neighborhood where they are undoubtedly in demand.
Sure, you could stroll down to Duboce Park Cafe, where they carry a small selection, or you could pick up a mass-produced box of the Little Debbie's variety at CVS or your local corner store. But it's basically been impossible to get a fresh-baked doughnut in the neighborhood proper.
That's set to change tomorrow, however, as Choux (248 Fillmore) adds two über-fancy doughnuts to its lineup of baked goods.
The local cream puffery will begin selling two varieties of "chounuts," as they've been dubbed, this weekend. The debut flavors: "Supernuts," made with hazelnut custard, sugar icing, and topped with almond crunch, and "Berries & Cream," filled with raspberry curd and vanilla custard, and topped with sugar icing and dried strawberries. Chounuts will be available at Choux on weekends only, with the flavor lineup changing each week.
These ain't your regular ol' Krispy Kreme crullers, and they're priced accordingly: a single chounut will set you back $4.50, displacing $4 toast as the area's most indulgent carb-heavy breakfast snack. After having endured the local doughnut drought for so many years, we can only hope they're worth the price (and wait).
