An unidentified man sustained serious head injuries and two broken wrists last night after he was pushed into the path of an oncoming Muni train at Civic Center Station.

According to Paul Rose, media spokesperson for the San Francisco MTA, a physical altercation led to the suspect pushing or knocking the victim into the path of the train at 8:58pm last night. According to Bay City News, a fire dispatcher said the male was able to pull himself off the Muni tracks after the incident.

The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where he is being treated with life-threatening injuries. The suspect in the fight fled the scene, and police report that an investigation is underway as police search for the identity and whereabouts of the suspect.

As noted by SFist, Muni station platforms are equipped with surveillance systems, which will hopefully prove helpful in identifying the alleged culprit.

Civic Center Station was temporarily shut down for investigations, and service was restored around 10:30pm, according to a SFMTA tweet. "All trains going through Civic Center are single tracking on the inbound side until further notice," wrote Rose in an email this afternoon.
