At 10:41am today, a dark blue Scion xB was stolen from the 100 block of Golden Gate Avenue. A four-month-old baby was inside the vehicle.

Police located the car, with the infant safe inside, at 10:51am in front of the Public Defender's Office at 555 7th St., said SFPD spokesman Albie Esparza. The male suspect was taken into custody — as legal advice was shouted from the windows of the Public Defender's Office — and the baby was returned to its mother.

The identity of the suspect has not been released, Esparza said, and an interview with the victim will determine charges. If the suspect jumped in the car and drove off, he could be charged with a felony stolen vehicle. Pulling the mother out of the vehicle could equate to a car-jacking charge, and child endangerment and kidnapping charges are also a possibility.

We'll update this story if and when additional details are released.

Update, 3:30pm: SFPD has released the identity of the suspect in this morning’s vehicle theft. Solomon Alemu, a 34-year-old San Francisco resident, was booked into the county jail and is being charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, vehicle theft and probation violations.

According to the SFPD’s latest account, the father of the infant was driving near Leavenworth and Turk when a person kicked his vehicle. The victim pulled over and got out of the car to inspect the damage when Alemu jumped in and drove off with the child in the backseat.
