Do you remember Hank's 500, the American Veterans Club, and Lou's and Brown's Used Furniture? If so (or even if not), you'll likely get a kick out of these still images from a 1973 film that took place at least partially in the Lower Haight.

The screenshots are taken from a movie called The Laughing Policeman, starring Walter Matthau and Bruce Dern. The film is described on IMDB thusly:

"In San Francisco, one victim in a mass murder is a police detective. His partner and a new partner investigate in the city's seamy side."

ReelSF detailed the Lower Haight scenes in a recent post, juxtaposing stills from the film with their modern-day counterparts.

For example, there's the bricked-up exterior of Hank's 500 Club, at the corner of Haight and Fillmore, where Wonderland is today:

Hank's 500 was a notorious neighborhood bar and epicenter of fights, stabbings, and other illicit activity (look for a Hoodline profile on it soon).

Then there's the American Veteran's Club, where Mad Dog in the Fog is located today. An interior scene at the club is depicted at the top of this story, while an exterior shot shows the club on the left below:
