Traffic patterns near UCSF's Parnassus campus will be disrupted today and tomorrow to accommodate a fleet of construction vehicles headed for Saunders Court. That courtyard, located just north of Parnassus Avenue and behind the Clinical Sciences Building, adjoins the school's radiology lab, which is being demolished as part of the first phase of UCSF's Long Range Development Plan (LRDP).

To reach the courtyard, trucks will take 7th Avenue to Kirkham Street to Koret Way. According to a notice sent to neighbors, vehicles are expected to arrive every 15 to 20 minutes between 9am and 3:30pm on Monday and Tuesday. Streets and sidewalks will remain open, and trucks "will stage offsite to prevent idling in the neighborhood," according to the notice.

Approved by the UC's Board of Regents in 2014, the LRDP is a master plan for redeveloping the university system's campuses. Much of the work consists of constructing new buildings, but because the Parnassus campus is deeply integrated into residential areas, many projects directly impact people who live nearby. In 2014, a building in need of seismic retrofitting at 347 Parnassus was demolished to create a public green space, landscaped with native plants. Other projects affecting residents include a traffic-calming plan for 5th Avenue and Kirkham and the removal of trees in the Mt. Sutro Open Space Reserve to reduce the risk of wildfires.

This fall, crews will demolish Medical Research Building 4, where Kirkham meets Koret Way, as well as the Laboratory of Radiology, located behind UC Hall at 533 Parnassus. After that, work begins to renovate the Clinical Sciences Building with seismic upgrades.

UCSF's Community Advisory Group holds quarterly meetings to discuss LRDP projects with its Inner Sunset neighbors. The next scheduled meeting is on Wednesday, September 2nd at 6:30pm. For more information, contact them via email or visit them on Facebook.
