Friday

Raw Shack at the deYoung Museum

deYoung artist-in-residence Shawn Feeney has created a music-improvisation game and "sonic Rorschach inkblot test" called Raw Shack. He gathers a group of musicians, then distributes cards with messages like "hummingbird trapped in ice" or "you're actually playing a banjo." The musicians then interpret the prompts in "as literal, figurative, personal or dramatic a way as they wish," according to Feeney. Raw Shack is free to attend, but you'll need to pay $10 to explore the museum's collection. The deYoung is located at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive; the fun starts at 7pm.

Dietland Reading and Discussion

Tonight at 7:30, Green Apple Books on the Park (1231 9th Ave.) is hosting an author event with Virgie Tovar, Kjerstin Gruys, and Sarai Walker, who'll discuss Walker's first novel, Dietland. The novel's protagonist, Plum Kettle, becomes involved in a "sinister plot" with "an underground community of women who live life on their own terms," which leads her to reassess her own body-image issues.

Saturday

Summer Solstice Yoga Classes

Sunday is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. To celebrate, Athleta SF is offering free yoga classes near the Conservatory of Flowers to mark the occasion. Sun worshippers have two options: a 10 am class with Athleta SF brand ambassador Rebecca Mayne, or an 11:15 session with Sweat Republic. This event is free to attend, but to save your spot, visit Athleta SF's Eventbrite page to RSVP.

Knitting Circle at Sunset Branch Library

On the first and third Saturdays of each month, the SF Public Library's Sunset branch (1305 18th Ave.) opens its doors for a knitting circle, welcoming loopers and purlers at every level (including kids). The two-hour event kicks off at 10:15am.

Sunset Mercantile Festival

The Sunset Mercantile, "a festive, open air pop-up metropolis," will open for business on Saturday from 10am-4pm. The festival showcases area businesses and entrepreneurs, with artisan food from local restaurants, fresh produce, food trucks, a beer and wine tasting garden, and more. Kids are welcome, too. The event will be held at 42nd Avenue and Kirkham, outside Francis Scott Key Elementary.
