Hayes Valley has been somewhat quiet this summer, but beyond all the "Sale" placards dotting the sidewalk of Hayes Street and the tourists visiting the temple in Patricia's Green, a handful of events are still taking place in the neighborhood. Here are a few notable ones to put on your calendar, for this weekend and beyond:
- On Saturday morning, the San Francisco Zen Center is hosting a talk by Ryushin Paul Haller (Urban Temple Dharma teacher and former Abbot of City Center) on the topic of dharma. The talk begins at 10am, and you can attend in person or catch it on a livestream.
- Public Bikes and La Marzocco coffee machines are teaming up this weekend to celebrate a connection between bikes and coffee. On Saturday at 10am, a bike ride will leave from the shop. From 4-6pm, they'll host a kickoff party, with sandwiches from Bicycle Banh Mi and beer. Sunday brings a "barista basics" class at Public from 10-11:30am, and on Monday evening, an affogato social featuring Smitten Ice Cream will go down from 5:30-6:30pm. For a full list of events, check out the Facebook event page.
- Dark Garden, Hayes Valley's custom milliner shop, is hosting a huge rummage sale of their corset collection this Sunday, July 19th. The shop has gone through its trunks of costumes and piles of corsets in all sizes, and will be offering them up at a hefty discount. Of particular interest: pieces from past Edwardian Ball collections. The sale starts at 11am.
- Looking for an easy-to-digest cultural experience this weekend? The SF Symphony is hosting not one but two movies with orchestral accompaniment at Davies Symphony Hall over the next few days. Catch J.J. Abrams' Star Trek at 7:30pm tonight and Monday night, or relive the magic of Back to the Future with showings Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. (Tomorrow, July 18th, come early and take a picture with a piece of film history: there'll be a DeLorean parked outside the Symphony Box Office from 6pm-7:30pm.)
- Looking ahead to next week, Gather will be celebrating its one-year anniversary on Thursday, July 23rd. The festivities will run from 6-8pm and include free tarot card readings, 15 percent off all purchases, and goodie bags for early arrivals.
