Meet Sew-Op: A Hidden Market Street Resource For Sewers And CraftersPhotos: Jennie Butler / Hoodline

San Francisco is a troublesome place for artsy and DIY-loving residents: living spaces are cramped, art stores are rapidly closing and affordable studios are few and far between. But crafters have a local resource they might not know about: Sew-Op. It’s a nonprofit that operates as a sort-of open studio for anyone who needs crafting space.

In its entirety, Sew-Op is a tiny room at 1829 Market St. (It's so small that it's easy to miss—visitors should keep an eye out for a sign that reads “You’re crafty!”) But the lack of space doesn’t hinder the shop from tending to every possible sewing need, with a huge selection of fabric, ribbons, zippers, buttons, and tape measures—not to mention ironing boards, cutting tables and mannequins. For a rental fee of $20/hour, everything is up for grabs (within reason). Sewing devotees can also pay $250 a month for unlimited access and their own key.

“We wanted to create a space for the community,” said Sew-Op's co-curator, Elizabeth Clarke. “Anyone can come in, use the equipment and have people here to provide them with any help they need.”

Clarke teaches a variety of sewing and DIY classes at Sew-Op, from "knitting for absolute beginners” to cross-stitching. Classes max out at five people, to ensure one-on-one attention.

Clarke has been crafting since childhood, but got serious about the hobby a few years ago, while she was in law school. She found that knitting and sewing helped her manage the stress and anxiety of school, and eventually decided that crafting, not law, was her calling. Clarke teamed up with fellow law student and Sew-Op owner Catherine Turner last May. Turner had been running the place herself for two years previously.

Clarke hangs this sign so students can find her Tuesday afternoon workshop.

Sew-Op hosts workshops every Tuesday and Saturday. Private lessons run $50, and group workshops are $30 and can be booked though Clarke. The space is open for drop-ins on Tuesdays from 4-6pm and Saturdays from 1-3pm; all other times are by appointment.
