The Embarcadero BART station closed shortly before 2pm Monday due to a major medical emergency, according to its Twitter account. An employee on the scene said there is a "body under the train," and was telling all passengers to leave the station.

BART spokesperson Jim Allison confirmed, "Yes we do have a fatality at the Embarcadero station." Hoodline saw a police officer interviewing a woman inside the gates, and several emergency vehicles lined Market Street near the station entrance after it happened.

People leaving the Embarcadero BART station were warning others trying to enter the station that it was closed.

BART's service advisories web page says, "There is a major delay at Embarcadero in the SFO, Millbrae, Daly City and East Bay directions due to a major medical emergency. Trains are not stopping at Embarcadero until further notice."

The station was emptying out and employees were closing all gates.

Allison said the emergency was reported at 1:25pm and that trains were being turned around as of 1:40pm. Hoodline will report more details as we get them.

Update, 8/24, 2:25pm: On BART's media relations recorded hotline, Allison said a person was struck by the eastbound Dublin/Pleasanton to Daly City train, and San Francisco Fire Department and the BART Police were responding.

Only one of the four lines running through the Embarcadero station is operating. The Pittsburg/Bay Point to SFO, or yellow line, is running in both directions, Allison said, single tracking through the station. Passengers riding BART will need to transfer to the yellow line to continue their travels through Embarcadero station.

Update, 8/24, 2:50pm: BART has no information yet on the fatality. The station remains closed to passengers entering and exiting, and there are major delays from the East Bay to San Francisco and vice-versa, Allison said. He added that he was told the coroner is on the scene and "We are working to resolve the situation, but it is causing major delays for passengers heading transbay." Allison said to expect delays of up to 20 minutes. The Fremont to Richmond line is unaffected.

Update, 8/24, 5:35pm: Embarcadero station has re-opened and BART is resuming normal service. Lt. Paul Kwon of BART Police confirmed the victim was male, and said based on statements, it appeared the victim intentionally jumped in front of the train.
