It's been a while since we last heard about First Thursdays in the Upper Haight. The event was proposed last December by Adam Brodner of Goorin Bros. to showcase the neighborhood as a destination for locals to gather and socialize, eat, drink, and shop.
Things lagged a bit over the summer while Brodner was out of town, but since August, he's been back stoking the First Thursday fires. He told Hoodline via email:
Thursday, October 1st is goodbye summer, hello fall! I’m trying to get everybody back into it. I hate that I disappeared right when we were getting momentum, but i’m so grateful people have kept it going. It’s actually meant a lot to me on a very personal level, and I want to see it continue to grow into something that really showcases the amazing treasure that is Haight-Ashbury!
For the event on Thursday, October 1st, Goorin Bros. will have live music, a hosted bar, catered food, balloons and 15 percent off merchandise for the night.
In addition to Goorin Bros.' festivities, a few other shops are joining the fun.
The Red Victorian will hold its monthly art opening on October 1st. Each month, the Red Vic brings in new art for the walls inside the space, purchasing one piece at the end of the month for permanent display. The rest of the pieces go up for sale. This month's incoming artists include Naomi Lee, Steven Terrell T-Rex, and Jorge's Art Collective, as well as a Selfie Museum installation. The fun starts at 6:30pm.
Piper's Shoe Parlor will serve wine and beer, and possibly host a DJ. They'll also have 20 percent off selected merchandise for the night.
Booksmith (where, full disclosure, I also work) will host Shipwreck, its monthly literary erotic fanfiction competition on October 1st, starting at 7pm. In honor of Halloween, the featured book is Carrie.
Finally, Aviator Nation will host Santa Cruz-based band The Shapes inside their 1501 Haight space from 8-10pm. To RSVP, look for an event on Aviator Nation's Facebook page in the coming weeks.
