Each week, we'll be featuring an especially interesting event in the neighborhood, based on the event submissions we get and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
Looking for a nontraditional way to immerse yourself in the holiday spirit? Here's one: Unsilent Night.
Since 1992, groups in 101 cities around the world—including San Francisco, New York and Brussels—have gathered one evening in December and paraded around, boomboxes and bluetooth speakers in hand, blasting an original composition created by an artist who harbors a love for both experimental electronic music and Christmas caroling.
The official San Francisco gathering—hosted by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players—runs from 4:45-5:45pm Saturday, Dec. 19th (rain or shine), beginning and ending at Civic Center Plaza across from City Hall.
To participate, simply download one of the four MP3s onto your smartphone and bring a bluetooth speaker if you have one to amplify the sound. Or, bring a boombox and the Contemporary Music Players will provide you with a good old-fashioned cassette.
Once the parade begins, everyone will press play at the same time and turn the center of the city into one very Unsilent Night.
If the time or location don't quite work for you, there's an Unofficial Unsilent Night promenade that night as well. This group meets at 7pm at Dolores Park and parades through the Mission. Both gatherings are absolutely free.
Those aren't the only events in the neighborhood worth checking out this weekend. From holiday craft fairs to a holiday toy giveaway, here's what else is on tap:
