A stretch of SoMa's Seventh Street could be in for a big change.

The owners of City Center Inn & Suites, located at 240 Seventh St. and 259 Seventh St., and a two-story building at 41 Langton, have submitted a request to the Planning Department to discuss plans to raze the existing buildings in favor of new residences and a hotel.

Initial details indicate that the property owner hopes to replace the 34-room motel at 259 Seventh St. with an 80-90 room hotel with limited parking. On an empty lot across the street at 240 Seventh St., the owners are seeking to construct a mixed-use apartment complex. Finally, behind that lot at 41 Langton St., a four-room motel constructed in 1908 would be razed in favor of a 4-6 unit condominium building.

The architect on the project, Edward Muffeny—who worked on the development of City Center Inn years ago—tells us that this potential project is still in the very early planning stages. The total number of units for each site will not be confirmed until after a meeting with Planning in January.

Though online reviews don't tell the full story, with a 1½-star rating on Yelp and just two positive reviews out of 34, it looks as though City Center Inn may not be sorely missed if plans do proceed. "The WORST hotel EVER!!!! Run away!" one former patron wrote in July. Echoing that sentiment, others have warned of unpleasant interactions with staff, dirty rooms and bed bug sightings. Perhaps with a fresh hotel will come a clean slate for the site.
