While we don't report on every crime, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported around SoMa over the past three weeks. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.

Self-Driving Car Crash

Technology news site CIO.com reports that on Jan. 8th, a Nissan Leaf that was steering itself crashed into a parked vehicle on Seventh Street just before the Bryant Street intersection—marking the first time a self-driving car has crashed in San Francisco.

According to the report, the car, operated by a computer from Cruise Automation, began veering into the left lane, then correcting to the right, when the driver decided to put the car back in manual mode and take over. However, the driver did not change the car's path quickly enough, crashing into a parked Prius. There were no injuries, just minor damage to both cars.

Homeless Stabbing

A man was stabbed at 1:30am Jan. 16th on the 200 block of Utah Street. The victim, 45, was sleeping outside in a tent when he was awoken by someone yelling. When the victim told the noisemaker to be quiet, the suspect, a 55-year-old man, approached, cut him on the forehead and fled. The victim was transported to the hospital with a minor laceration; the suspect was not apprehended.

Strong-Arm Robberies

At 9pm on Jan. 16th, a 28-year-old woman was robbed while walking on the 1600 block of Market Street. The suspect, a man age 20-25, approached her from behind, knocked her down, grabbed her purse and ran. Two nearby workers chased the suspect for several blocks, but eventually saw him jump into a gray sedan and flee southbound on Otis Street. The victim did not suffer any injuries, and the suspect was not apprehended.

A man, 41, was forcibly robbed around 10pm on Jan. 9th, on the 100 block of Van Ness. After approaching the victim, the suspect, a man age 25-30, pushed him to the ground, punched him, grabbed his phone and fled. The victim was transported to the hospital with a knee injury. No arrest was made.

Assault Hospitalizes One

An altercation at 11:30pm Jan. 9th on the 700 block of Harrison Street put one man in the hospital and another in jail. The victim, 20, was standing on the sidewalk and got into a physical altercation with four other men around the same age. The victim was then hit on the back of the head with an unknown object and fell to the ground. All four suspects fled, but the man who hit the victim over the head was later arrested.

Mission Street Hot Prowl

A resident of the 600 block of Mission Street awoke on Jan. 7th to find that someone had entered his apartment and taken money and clothing. No suspects were identified.
