
While we don't report on every crime, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported around SoMa over the past month. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.
Shootings on Folsom
Two individuals suffered minor gunshot wounds around 2:15am on Feb. 7th, on the 1500 block of Folsom Street (between 11th and 12th streets). The first victim, a 24-year-old man, was punched by an unknown person and fell to the ground, causing the handgun in this pocket to discharge. In addition to a gunshot wound on his leg, a 21-year-old woman standing nearby was struck in the foot. Both were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and no arrest was made.
At the same time that same night, a 23-year-old man was shot at Folsom and Juniper, an alley between 10th and 11th streets. The victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and pelvis, was uncooperative when officers attempted to interview him at the hospital. Bullet casings and blood were found at the scene. No arrest was made.
Attempted Murder of CHP Officer
As we reported earlier this month, a California Highway Patrol officer was stabbed multiple times in the neck on Feb. 2nd while responding to a call about a person in the road on the Essex Street on-ramp.
A responding two-person unit was approaching a man near a homeless encampment at the on-ramp when the man attacked one of the officers and fled. The officer's partner administered first aid, and the stabbed officer survived. The suspect was later arrested at Fourth and Brannan, and booked into county jail on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Robbed At Gunpoint
A 27-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint while sitting in his car at Eighth and Natoma around 1:30pm Jan. 27th. Three male suspects, all in their 20s, approached the victim, pulling out a gun. They then took the victim's property, including his phone, car keys, and components for a satellite television. All three suspects then fled westbound on foot via Natoma Street.
Robbed At Simulated Gunpoint
A man, 37, was robbed around 9:45pm Feb. 6th at Sixth and Harrison streets. The victim had double-parked his car and begun passing out flyers for an event when the suspect, a man in his 20s or 30s, walked up, simulated holding a gun in his pocket and demanded the victim's property. The victim complied, and the suspect fled in the victim's vehicle. No arrest was made.
Robbed At Knifepoint
While riding his bike near Third Street and Taber Alley (just off Bryant near South Park) around 11:10am on Feb. 20th, a 25-year-old was robbed of his belongings by two men, both in their early 20s. The first suspect stepped in front of the victim as he was riding, preventing him from continuing down the street. One suspect then pulled out a knife and demanded his property. The victim complied, handing over his bike, phone and wallet. Both suspects then fled eastbound on Taber on the bike and on foot; neither were apprehended.
Assaulted & Robbed
Around 4:30am Feb. 17th, a 62-year-old man was robbed of a box of books at Mission and Seventh streets. The victim was standing on the sidewalk with the books next to him when two suspects, a man and a woman both in their early 30s, approached. The male suspect took the box of books and then punched the victim in the face. Both suspects fled the scene, and no arrest was made.
In a similar incident, a man, 35, was robbed of a bag of cookies around 4pm Feb. 12th. One suspect, a woman age 40-50, approached the victim, but the victim walked away. He was then approached by a second suspect, a man age 40-50, who punched him. The victim fell to the ground, and the male suspect took the victim's bag of cookies and fled.
A man and woman in their early 20s were attacked by a 46-year-old woman around 2:15am Feb. 11th. The victims were walking on the 500 block of Mission Street (between First and Second streets) when the suspect attempted to take the female victim's purse. The male victim stepped in to help, but the suspect broke a bottle over his head and slashed his face. The suspect then punched the female victim in the mouth and bit her stomach before police arrived. The suspect was arrested, and both victims were transferred to the hospital.
At 12:45pm on Feb. 8th, a 20-year-old man was hit in the face and robbed while on the 400 block of Natoma Street. The victim was walking down the alley looking for directions when he was punched in the face and robbed of his laptop and headphones. No arrest was made.
Purse Snatched
A 49-year-old woman was robbed of her purse while walking home around 10:30pm Feb. 3rd, at Third and Harrison. A man came from behind and forcefully pulled the victim's purse from her shoulder. The victim fled, and the suspect was not apprehended.
Tent Arson
A homeless man, 42, residing in an encampment on the 400 block of Berry Street had his property set on fire around 2:15am on Feb. 20th, after calling 911 on a threatening individual. A responding SFPD unit drove the victim around looking for the suspect. When they returned to the victim's encampment, his property was on fire. The suspect had already fled, and was not apprehended.
Two Attempts at a Home Burglary
A home on Brush Place, an alley off Folsom between Eighth and Langton streets, was targeted by robbers twice last week. On Feb. 18th, the victim, a 53-year-old man, was sleeping when he heard his dog growling. The victim went to his balcony and saw a suspect on the fire escape, entering through a window.
The following night, the victim was out of town when his neighbors saw two suspects inside the residence, with both the front gate and door open. The neighbors chased away the suspects, who fled in a silver Nissan sedan with a third suspect. No arrest was made.
