The filthy underpass on 45th St. between MLK Boulevard and telegraph Avenue in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland appears to be home to several houseless people. At least a few times in the past year or so, walking under the freeway and BART tracks, I have seen notices from the city that the people living here must leave. On the date posted, I saw city workers cleaning up the underpass, and throwing away what may have been the houseless peoples' mattresses, cardboard boxes, and other things. This didn't seem to stop the houseless people from continuing to live there; days later it began to look inhabited again.
The underpass continues to be a very dirty section of an otherwise cleaner neighborhood, and the appearance of syringes on the sidewalk suggest that drugs are present in the area as well.
