Each week, we'll feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
If you're a fan of dry rosé wines or want to learn more about them, Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant in the Ferry Building is making it even more enticing. Its new "Think Pink" promotion combines the shop's enthusiasm for education with a charitable component.
Tonight, the store will host a rosé flight night from 4:30–7:30pm, and then starting on April 7th and running on Thursdays for six months, each week will feature "Think Pink Thursdays." The corkage fee for bottles of rosé will be $5 instead of the usual $9, and it will be donated to charity: $2.50 will go toward Bay Area Young Survivors (of cancer), donated from Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, and $2.50 will go toward Tipping Point Community to fight poverty, courtesy of the store's partner, IfOnly.
"Rosé has just taken off," said the store's co-owner, Debbie Zachareas, who just returned from a trip to Provence. "And with that there have been so many rosés that have come to us that we have loved. And we want to do more with them because they’re fantastic and there’s a community of people who really celebrate rosé." She expects the nights to be social events, with people sharing their wines and urging each other to "Try this!"
The launch tonight will feature a flight of five two-ounce pours of rosé from the Canary Islands in Spain, Provence in France, the Rheingau in Germany, Napa Valley in California and Calabria in Italy.
Zachareas said the store's Wednesday flight nights are so popular, she wanted to create that same "vibrant energy" on Thursdays, and the idea of a rosé night came to her out of the blue. She's been working closely with IfOnly on other projects, so she decided to combine the efforts.
"Initially, I wasn’t going to charge a corkage fee at all," she said, then thought, "For $5 more, we can take all of that money and donate it to charity, and do something good for the community while we’re creating community within."
